In total, the G7 countries need to allocate $500 million to repair the sarcophagus.
The US Department of State announced its intention to allocate up to $100 million for the restoration of safety systems at the Ukrainian Chernobyl nuclear power plant, which was initiated by the G7 countries. This was reported by the press service of the State Department.
The New Safe Confinement (NSC, an isolation arch structure over the destroyed Chernobyl power unit) was damaged in a UAV strike last year, the State Department pointed out. It was originally designed to have a 100-year service life. "Without repairs, the NSC can no longer provide adequate protection, posing a threat of dangerous leakage of highly radioactive materials in Europe," the press service said.
The G7 countries need to allocate a total of $500 million to repair the sarcophagus, the body said. The U.S. called on the group's partners to share the financing of the NSC reconstruction.
