Slovenia's Incumbent Prime Minister Announces He Is Going Into Opposition
Robert Golob

His party won a minimal victory in the parliamentary elections.

Slovenia's incumbent Prime Minister Robert Golob, whose Movement for Freedom (GS) party won a minimal victory in parliamentary elections, announced that he was unable to find partners to form a new government, reported by European Pravda, Golob's statement was quoted by STA.

After talks with President Natasha Pirtz Musar, Golob said the Freedom Movement was looking forward to being in opposition.

Golob called the potential center-right coalition a "coalition of crooks" that will not last long.

"Therefore, we are happily preparing to work in the opposition and have already declared today that we will strictly adhere to the principle of the legitimacy of the rule of law and we expect this from everyone else," added Golob, who assured that he will remain an MP.

After the election results, Golob's liberal party Movement for Freedom (GS) won 29 seats in parliament, one more than the right-wing Slovenian Democratic Party (SDS) led by Janez Janša.

The incumbent Prime Minister Golob invited the leaders of all parties that won seats in parliament, except the right-wing SDS, to join the coalition, but no agreement could be reached.

At the same time, Zoran Stevanovic, leader of the pro-Russian anti-system party Resni.ca Zoran Stevanovic, was elected speaker of the Slovenian parliament, complicating Slovenian Prime Minister Robert Golob's chances of forming a government.

Although Stevanovic has said he will not join a coalition with either Golob or Janša, his party is considered a more likely partner for the latter.
