The new tactic undermines a key element of Russian offensives.
Russia, in its fifth year of war, has large amounts of artillery of various types that are carefully camouflaged and protected on the front lines, but Ukraine has discovered a way to counter those means of defeat, wrote media outlet Forbes. Instead of spending drones to search for carefully hidden expensive targets, the Ukrainian Armed Forces have started hitting convoys that are carrying shells to combat positions. What is special about the new tactics of the AFU and what do the Russians have to lose?
Artillery of various types of the Russian Armed Forces is well camouflaged, quickly changes positions after an attack, has anti-drone protection and is repairable, according to a Western media article. In addition, the installations can be located up to 70 kilometers from the front, and this further complicates detection. At the same time, highly visible trucks and other vehicles are heading towards the positions carrying ammunition: sometimes for several guns at once. Taking this into account, the Ukrainian armed forces have taken shell convoys under fire control, Western analysts explained. Thus they found an effective means of fighting artillery with UAVs, since the targets are easily visible, undisguised and have to move openly along highways.
The Russian Armed Forces use old D-30 towed howitzers, removed from storage at Soviet ranges, and modern self-propelled units that can fire at a distance of up to 70 kilometers, Forbes wrote. These capabilities remain the main part of the Russian army's offensive potential, which operates according to a traditional scenario: first a powerful artillery preparation, followed by an infantry offensive, then the guns moving forward into newly occupied territories and repeating the cycle. And despite the fact that the ORYX project counted more than 40,000 destroyed or damaged guns, there are still enough of them on the thousand-kilometer front line. It is difficult for the AFU to identify so many camouflaged targets on such a large battle line. The Ukrainians have found a vulnerability of the AFU - instead of hunting guns, they hit convoys with BCs. Convoys are trucks or other vehicles that travel on broken roads, poorly maneuverable, and poorly protected from UAVs, so a single FPV drone can be enough to destroy artillery capabilities.
"Ukraine has adopted a new strategy, targeting supply convoys carrying large volumes of shells required by each artillery unit. By doing so, Ukraine is disrupting the core of Russian military operations," Forbes analysts summarized.
