Who Was The Kiev Shooter?
Dmitry Vasilchenko

The Moscow native had previously lived in Bakhmut and had Russian contacts in his phone.

Dmitry Vasilchenkov, who did the April 18 terrorist attack in Kiev, had himself previously contacted police on several occasions and had shown himself to be an anxious individual. In addition, there were Russian contacts in his phone book.

Sources OBOZ.UA in law enforcement agencies reported this. According to them, the attacker contacted law enforcers both when he lived in Bakhmut and when he moved to Kiev.

The reasons were different. Vasylchenkov claimed that some company in the yard wanted to steal his belongings, then a neighbor allegedly threatened him, then a woman living in his apartment in Goloseevsky district used foul language.

Also, he once contacted the police about the fact that he allegedly discovered surveillance of his apartment and was very concerned about it. "We call such people 'alarmists,'" the source said.

In the phone book of the eliminated shooter "there are Russian contacts as well." However, it is not yet known whether he communicated with relatives, acquaintances who live directly on Russian territory, or with people in the occupied territory of Ukraine.

On a Facebook page that was active in 2016-2019 and maintained under the nickname "Bakhmut V.D.V", Vasilchenko published anti-Ukrainian and anti-Semitic messages.

An OBOZ.UA interlocutor confirmed that Vasilchenko was a retired AFU major, that is, a military pensioner. The last income he received in April 2026 was from the Pension Fund (pension).

He had three units of registered personal weapons - a gas pistol and two carbines. The pistol and the MKM carbine were deregistered, while the carbine with which he shot people in Kiev was registered.

Dmitry Vasilchenkov had previously attacked people in a supermarket. The incident took place at the ATB supermarket in Kiev - the attacker started punching out his goods at the cash register, bypassing the queue, for which he was reprimanded. The native of Moscow did not like it, he knocked the phone out of the victim's hands and injured his arm.

What is known about the terrorist attack

In the Goloseevsky district of Kiev, a man born in 1968 opened fire before barricading himself inside a Velmart supermarket with hostages. At least six people were killed, there are also injured.

The attacker was eliminated. He turned out to be Dmitry Vasilchenkov, who was born in Moscow, previously lived in Bakhmut, and also received a military pension. In 2024, he was tried for inflicting light bodily harm. But the criminal proceedings were closed because he reconciled with the victim.

The perpetrator, who opened fire on people in the Goloseevsky district of Kiev, had a legal weapon. The man brought the registered carbine to the permit system authorities in December 2025.

The President of Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky revealed the details of the terrorist attack in Kiev. According to him, the shooter's behavior was atypical, as he set fire to his own apartment before going out into the street with a gun.
