WSJ: Trump Has Abandoned The Idea Of Seizing Kharq Island In Iran
Donald Trump

A reason has been given.

U.S. President Donald Trump did not support the idea of seizing Kharq Island in Iran because he feared significant casualties among U.S. soldiers.

The Wall Street Journal reports The Wall Street Journal.

The Journal's piece described a detailed breakdown of what went on behind the scenes in the Trump administration already during the war with Iran, how the leader reacted to U.S. losses and why he made certain statements.

Sources said that Trump has a fear of sending troops into dangerous zones, where some of them will be injured and some won't come home at all. Actually, as has been the case with other presidents who have chosen to engage in wars.

Continuing the context of fear the WSJ writes that Trump "resisted sending U.S. troops to capture Kharq Island," which is the starting point for 90% of Iran's oil exports.

Although he was told the mission would succeed and capturing the territory would give the U.S. access to the Strait, he feared unacceptably high American casualties.

"They will be an easy target," said Trump, who was quoted by The Wall Street Journal's interlocutors.

The sources also said Trump yelled at his aides for hours when he learned that a U.S. plane had been shot down in Iran and two pilots were missing. He demanded that the military go after them immediately.

The interlocutors said images of the 1979 Iran hostage crisis - one of the presidency's biggest international policy failures in recent memory - kept running through his mind.

Additionally, over the past week or so, the U.S. and Iran have been actively negotiating through mediators to agree on a peace deal.

With that backdrop, White House officials told the publication that they believe a breakthrough in talks with Iran could be reached in the coming days. They say Washington is considering further talks in Pakistan.
