Xi also declined to have lunch with Trump.

During its September visit to Washington, the Chinese delegation requested that 73-year-old Chinese President Xi Jinping be provided with a private room to rest between summit events with U.S. President Donald Trump, The Wall Street Journal reports, citing sources familiar with the situation. In addition, Xi declined to attend a joint working lunch with the American leader.

The rest room was located in the West Wing of the White House. According to the publication’s sources, only Xi and his wife, Peng Liyuan, were allowed to use it. Not even his chief of staff, Cai Qi, had access to it. The Chinese side also requested that more time be set aside in the schedule for Xi to rest. As a result, a five-hour break was inserted into the summit’s program.

The arrangement of a separate rest room was an unusual detail. Dennis Wilder, a former senior director for China at the U.S. National Security Council who had been involved in organizing state visits by foreign leaders, stated that he had never encountered such a practice before.

In addition, the Chinese delegation did not schedule any events for Xi on the evening of his arrival in Washington. And on September 25, the last day of the visit, he spent about ten minutes at the National Archives—significantly less than the American organizers had originally anticipated. According to sources, Xi’s team drew up the schedule taking into account how much time he could spend on his feet, how far he would need to walk, and when he would need to stop.

Video footage shows Xi moving cautiously. As he descended the stairs at Andrews Air Force Base, he held onto the railing with one hand and Peng Liyuan’s hand with the other. Two days later, the couple were again holding hands as they climbed the stairs at the National Archives. At the same time, Xi, judging by the video, used Peng for support, the WSJ notes. Chinese state media edited these moments out of their broadcasts.

This isn’t the first time questions have arisen about Xi’s physical condition. In early September, he missed a gala dinner at the BRICS summit in India because he was feeling unwell, the WSJ previously reported. However, analysts interviewed by the publication found no signs of a decline in the Chinese leader’s cognitive abilities.
