Media: Plague In Russia Could Pose A Threat To China

Beijing's reaction is surprising.

In Russia's Irkutsk Region, following death of a young woman from the plague, anti-epidemic measures are being taken. About 200 people who may have come into contact with the patient are under medical observation. A quarantine is in effect in Shelekhov, and a mask mandate has already been implemented at the local aluminum plant.

The situation is also raising concerns due to the region’s proximity to China, with which it has close economic and people-to-people ties. However, Beijing has not yet announced any special restrictions in response to the incident, according to Dialog.UA.

The woman died after being admitted to the Shelekhov District Hospital. The head of Buryatia Alexey Tsydenov confirmed the death from the plague, while stating that the case was not linked to his republic. Following this, experts began identifying everyone who might have come into contact with the patient. Approximately 200 people were placed under observation.

The head of Rospotrebnadzor Anna Popova also arrived in the Irkutsk Region, where an emergency meeting of the Sanitary and Anti-Epidemic Commission was held. At the same time, the question of exactly where the infection occurred remains unresolved.

Russian media reported that the deceased may have worked at a facility specializing in plague control. Among the theories being considered was infection while handling hazardous biological material.

Mask mandate introduced in the Irkutsk Region

Meanwhile, it is no longer just medical facilities that are beginning to take precautionary measures. On October 4, it was reported that the Irkutsk Aluminum Plant in Shelekhov had implemented a mask mandate. Employees were asked to follow safety protocols and seek medical attention if symptoms appear, according to Ura.news.

Why the Situation Concerns China

The Irkutsk Region does not share a direct border with China, but distance is not the only factor in this case. The region has close ties with China through trade, tourism, and business. The Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China operates in Irkutsk; Chinese citizens live and work in the region, and Chinese businesses are present there. Tourists, entrepreneurs, and company employees regularly travel between Russian regions and China.

In addition, travel between the two countries has become significantly easier. China operates a visa-free regime for Russians: for certain purposes, visitors can stay in the country without a visa for up to 30 days. Thus, potential risks are determined not so much by the distance to the state border as by the movement of people, air travel, tourism, and business contacts.

A particularly important question will be whether new cases of the disease emerge among those who came into contact with the deceased.

Beijing Remains Calm for Now

Despite the events in the Irkutsk Region, there has been no noticeable reaction from China so far. Beijing has not reported the introduction of additional health restrictions due to the Russian plague case. There is also no information regarding the closure of the border or restrictions on travel between the two countries. The situation may change if new cases are identified.
