Snyder: It Could All Be Over By Spring

Snyder: It Could All Be Over By Spring
Timothy Snyder

Russia will seek to end the war.

American historian Timothy Snyder stated that, following a trip to the Ukrainian front, he considers a major breakthrough by the Russian army unlikely. He confirmed that in the second half of 2026, Ukrainian troops are recapturing more territory than they are losing and inflicting significantly heavier losses on the enemy.

At the same time, according to the historian, Russia is systematically destroying the Ukrainian economy far from the front lines by attacking factories, mines, and steel mills. It is precisely the damage to the economy and the livelihoods of Ukrainians, Snyder believes, that has become one of Moscow’s advantages compared to the situation six months ago.

He also identified the Ukrainian and Russian armies as the only ones currently shaping new approaches to modern warfare. In his assessment, Ukraine is implementing military innovations, while Russia adopts them with a delay of several months but applies them on a large scale.

According to Snyder, the Russian authorities initially planned to wage the war in a way that would not affect citizens’ daily lives. However, Ukrainian long-range drones are now regularly striking targets deep within Russian territory. The historian suggested that due to a shortage of contract soldiers, Russia may need to resort to mobilization. Against this backdrop, he concluded that Moscow is interested in ending the war by spring 2027.
