Nutritionists Have Named The Best Drink To Have After Dinner

It helps support kidney function.

What a person drinks throughout the day can affect kidney function. It’s especially important to pay attention to your choice of beverage in the evening, after dinner, according to Health.

Nutritionists believe that plain water is the best choice at this time. It helps maintain the necessary fluid levels in the body and contains no sugar, calories, or sodium, which are present in many other beverages.

The kidneys constantly filter the blood, removing waste products and excess fluid from the body. With sufficient water intake, this process is more efficient, and metabolic waste is excreted along with urine.

Studies also link adequate hydration to a reduced risk of kidney stones. In particular, drinking water in the evening helps maintain the necessary fluid levels in the body throughout the night.

Nutritionist Kelly L. Burgess notes that adequate fluid intake helps lower levels of vasopressin—a hormone that signals the kidneys to retain water. According to her, persistently elevated levels of this hormone can increase the strain on the body’s organs.

At the same time, most people do not need to consume additional electrolytes or potassium from special hydration drinks in the evening. Water also contains no caffeine, so drinking it before bed should not interfere with falling asleep.

Experts advise choosing whatever type of water you prefer: filtered, bottled, tap, or sparkling. If desired, you can add citrus or other fruits to it.

As a general guideline, you can drink 240–470 ml of water between dinner and bedtime, though the required amount of fluid varies from person to person. For those who frequently wake up at night to use the restroom, it’s recommended to drink your evening portion one to two hours before bedtime.

For variety, you can also drink unsweetened cranberry juice. Nutritionist Annamarie Rodriguez notes that it contains antioxidants, including anthocyanins and flavonols, which may be beneficial for kidney health.

However, people with severe chronic kidney disease, heart failure, or those undergoing dialysis should not significantly increase their fluid intake on their own. In such cases, excess water can accumulate in the body, so it’s best to consult a doctor about your fluid intake.
