Ukrainian Drones Struck A Key Russian Oil Refinery

The Samara Region came under drone attack on the night of September 22, resulting in damage to the KNPZ. A major fire broke out at the facility.
This was reported by RBC-Ukraine citing OSINT sources.
The region’s governor, Vyacheslav Fedorishchev, reported on his Telegram channel after midnight that a drone threat alert was in effect in the Samara region.
Later, Russians in public chat groups—likely citing other communication channels of Fedorishchev’s—wrote that drones had attacked the region.
The governor also urged residents of the Samara Region to follow safety guidelines, stay away from windows and glass partitions, and under no circumstances post any footage of drones flying overhead or air defense operations anywhere.
“A large column of smoke rose in the region. This is being reported by our followers. There is no information about the consequences or casualties. We are awaiting comments from the government,” reads one of the social media posts.
Footage from OSINT channels does indeed show not only a large fire at the refinery but also a tall, thick plume of black smoke rising high into the sky and stretching a considerable distance to the side.
As of Tuesday morning at 5:37 a.m., reports indicated that the fire was still burning. Employees of Russia’s Ministry of Emergency Situations are working at the scene.
The Samara Oil Refinery is one of the largest oil refineries in the Samara Region of the Russian Federation. The facility processes crude oil and gas condensate and produces gasoline, diesel fuel, kerosene, fuel oil, and other petroleum products.
The plant plays a crucial role in supplying fuel to regions across Russia, and its products are also used for the Russian Federation’s military logistics.
