In reality, however, the CEC’s scoreboard showed that the “Communist Party of the Russian Federation” was in second place, while the “Direct Democracy Party” had not even reached 1%.

During her speech, Pamfilova appeared uncertain, and her speech was halting as she read the preliminary results from a printout. The CEC chair’s mistakes are already being widely mocked on social media.

For his part, “pocket” opposition figure Gennady Zyuganov, leader of the Communist Party of the Russian Federation (CPRF), dared to call the election results a return to the “wild ’90s” during a broadcast on the “Russia 1” television channel. Russia’s top communist complained about the removal of observers from polling stations. ““Unfortunately, during the election campaigns, certain trends have emerged that are reminiscent of the wild ’90s. This absolutely cannot be allowed,” he stated.

At the same time, apparently so as not to anger the Kremlin too much, Zyuganov endorsed Russian dictator Vladimir Putin’s call for “the need for unity” and reiterated that the “CPRF” supports Russia’s war against Ukraine.
