Former CIA Director Petraeus: Crimea Will Become A Burden For Putin, Not A “Crown Jewel”

The Ukrainian military is successfully isolating occupied Crimea, and it is becoming a burden for Vladimir Putin, according to a member of the Security Council of the Kyiv Security Forum, General David Petraeus, who served as commander of U.S. Central Command from 2008 to 2010 and as director of the CIA from 2011 to 2012. He made this statement on September 14 during a special meeting of the Kyiv Security Forum’s Security Council members in Kyiv, according to the forum’s press service.

Petraeus highlighted Ukraine’s impressive results on the front lines and deep behind enemy lines.

“Ukrainian forces are now killing or wounding more Russian soldiers each month than Russia is mobilizing. They are penetrating ever deeper into the enemy’s logistical infrastructure and very effectively isolating Crimea—285 vessels that typically deliver goods, materials, and petroleum products there have been destroyed. Crimea is experiencing power outages and water shortages, and will likely have no electricity this winter. Crimea will become a burden for Putin, not a ‘jewel in the crown,’ he noted.

In addition, the general emphasized that Ukraine is striking Russian oil refineries, logistics warehouses, air and missile defense systems, and military-industrial complex facilities, inflicting colossal damage.

Petraeus also highlighted the unprecedented expansion of Ukrainian defense innovations: “Instead of 8 million drones, they plan to manufacture 10 million this year.”
