Ukraine Struck Three Russian Ships And A Unique Port On The Caspian Sea

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine assessed the consequences of the successful strikes.

On the night of September 10, the Ukrainian Defense Forces launched a strike on the Makhachkala commercial seaport in Dagestan. At least three Russian ships were hit in Novorossiysk. This was reported by the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

The Makhachkala Port is Russia’s only ice-free deep-water port on the Caspian Sea and an important transportation and logistics hub. It serves as a transit point for the Russia-Iran route, which is used, in particular, for military shipments.

“The port plays a key role in the Russia–Iran logistics corridor across the Caspian Sea, which is used to circumvent Western sanctions. Military supplies are transported along this route in both directions: from Iran to Russia—components and “Shahed”-type strike UAVs—and from Russia to Iran—explosives, drone components, and ammunition. A base of the Russian Federation’s Caspian Flotilla is stationed near the port,” the General Staff noted.

A fire broke out at the port following an attack by the Ukrainian Armed Forces. The extent of the damage is currently being assessed.
