Psychologists suggest asking yourself two simple questions that can help you better understand your own goals and make decisions without focusing solely on other people’s expectations. The first is: “Whose life are you living?” The second is: “Who should decide how to live it?” writes Psychology Today.
The answer to the first question usually seems obvious. But the second one gives you pause. For many people, it’s easier to follow a preconceived notion of a “successful life” than to decide for themselves what they truly want.
Research shows that people who set goals in line with their values and interests are more likely to put in greater effort, make significant progress, and rate their own well-being higher.
That said, making your own choices doesn’t mean you should ignore others’ advice. The experiences of friends, family, or colleagues can help you see things you might not have noticed on your own. However, the final decision is still yours to make.
“Desire alone is not enough to understand whether something is truly worth pursuing,” the authors note.
Psychologists suggest not only asking yourself what you want, but also figuring out why you want it and whether that goal aligns with other important aspects of your life.
“We cannot control every opportunity or outcome, but we can choose what to strive for and how to achieve it,” the authors write.
