A Russian drone violated Moldova’s airspace on September 8, prompting authorities to temporarily restrict flights. At that time, the plane carrying Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was at the Chisinau airport.

On the evening of September 8, Moldovan authorities temporarily closed their airspace after a Russian drone illegally crossed the border from Ukraine.
The violation was detected at approximately 4:20 p.m., and flight restrictions were imposed after 4:30 p.m. The decision was explained by the need to ensure the safety of aircraft that were in the country’s airspace at that time.
Due to the restrictions, three departures and four arrivals were delayed. Among the flights that were unable to depart on time was the one carrying Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. His plane remained at Chisinau Airport while authorities monitored the situation with the drone.
The drone crashed in a field
After 5:20 p.m., Moldovan authorities confirmed that the drone had crashed and exploded near the village of Starye Mikhaileny in the Ryshkan district. The crash site was approximately 160 kilometers from Chisinau International Airport.
After the incident was confirmed, flight restrictions were lifted, and Zelenskyy’s plane was able to take off with a delay. This was reported by the press secretary of the Moldovan government, Dmitry Chorich.
Later, Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gar Støre stated that Zelenskyy’s plane was allegedly “nearly struck” by a drone while taking off from Moldova. However, Moldovan authorities confirmed in their statement that the flight was indeed delayed due to the closure of airspace.
