An armed man was detained in California near U.S. President Donald Trump's golf club two days before his scheduled visit.
This was reported by POLITICO.
The incident occurred at the Trump National Golf Club in Rancho Palos Verdes, where Trump was scheduled to attend a private fundraiser for the Republican National Committee.
Investigators are determining whether the incident was linked to a potential threat against the president.
Armed man detained
According to police, federal agents took notice of a 38-year-old resident of Downey Janine John Taele. For several days in a row, he had been near the club, taking photos and videos of the area, and, investigators believe, observing the security preparations ahead of the president’s arrival.
During his arrest, a 16-round magazine loaded with expanding bullets was found in the man’s pocket. In his car, parked near the golf club, authorities found a loaded pistol with a round in the chamber and another loaded magazine.
Later, law enforcement officers searched the suspect’s home, where they seized several firearms—including illegally modified weapons—a large quantity of ammunition, body armor, radio communication devices, and notebooks containing notes that investigators described as cause for concern.
As it turned out, the man was already facing charges in another criminal case related to a robbery.
He has been charged with the illegal possession of firearms, prohibited ammunition, and the concealed carrying of a firearm. He pleaded not guilty in court.
Authorities emphasize that, at this time, they have no information indicating a real threat to the president or the public.
Nevertheless, the investigation is continuing in light of previous incidents related to Donald Trump’s security, including assassination attempts in 2024, following which his security measures were significantly strengthened.
