Ukraine Has Developed The "Shahed" Ultra-fast Interceptor

The jet-powered drone is already undergoing combat testing.

The first Ukrainian jet-powered interceptor drones designed to counter Shahed drones are undergoing combat testing. On August 14, this was reported by former Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov.

He noted that Ukraine is observing a trend in which the Russians are replacing conventional Shahed drones with jet-powered ones.

“This is a shift in the strategy of aerial warfare. Our response must be swift so that we can continue to defeat Russia in every technological cycle,” Fedorov said.

He recalled that last year Ukraine began systematically developing interceptor drones and now possesses one of the most advanced “small-scale” air defense systems in the world, whose capabilities are being studied by other armies. Now, he said, the task is to “redouble our efforts tenfold” to counter the threat of jet-powered drones as quickly as possible. Fedorov explained that over the course of the year, his team awarded grants to manufacturers through Brave1, conducted analyses, and assisted with testing; today, several Ukrainian manufacturers already have such solutions.

“I recently visited one of the manufacturing facilities. The team was among the first in Ukraine to create a jet-powered interceptor drone, which, thanks to its jet engine, can reach speeds of over 600 km/h. The design is currently undergoing combat testing. We’re awaiting the results and the first confirmed shoot-downs,” he said.

The former defense minister emphasized that it is important not to stop, but to continue investing, testing, and scaling up production.

“Defending Ukraine’s airspace remains one of the key pillars of our strategy in this war,” Fedorov concluded.
