Following the Russian Federation's nighttime attack on Kyiv.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that a shortage of interceptor missiles supplied by international partners was one of the reasons why a Russian ballistic missile could not be shot down during the nighttime attack. The Ukrainian head of state reported this on his Telegram channel.
According to Zelenskyy, Ukrainian air defense forces successfully destroyed attack drones and cruise missiles, but their capabilities to intercept ballistic targets remain limited.
“Our soldiers showed good results today in shooting down drones and cruise missiles, but, unfortunately, not when it came to Russian ballistic missiles. And the reason is precisely the insufficient supply of interceptor missiles,” the president emphasized.
Zelenskyy also called on international partners—primarily the United States and European countries—to adopt additional measures to strengthen Ukraine’s air defense at the upcoming NATO summit in Ankara.
On the night of July 6, the Russian Federation carried out a massive combined attack on Ukrainian territory. According to Ukrainian sources, six 3M22 “Zircon”/“Onyx” anti-ship missiles and 23 “Iskander-M”/S-400 ballistic missiles were launched. It is reported that 29 ballistic missiles, including anti-ship missiles, struck their targets.
The death toll in Kyiv is rising as a result of the strike. In the Darnytskyi and Podilskyi districts of the capital, strikes on residential high-rise buildings have been recorded, and civilian facilities have been damaged.
“As long as Patriot missiles remain in allied warehouses, this only encourages Russia to continue striking residential buildings. The U.S. and Europe have sufficient capabilities to stop this terror,” he said.
The head of state also spoke about the consequences of the nighttime strike on Kyiv. According to him, damage has been reported in more than ten districts of the capital, including residential buildings. Rescue services continue to work at the sites.
“So far, 64 people have been rescued, including two children. At this time, we know that, unfortunately, 11 people were killed as a result of this attack. My condolences to their families and loved ones. About 60 more people were injured,” Zelenskyy said.
In addition, the president spoke about the aftermath of the attack in the Kyiv region. According to him, 16 people were injured, and three more were killed.
“In Vyshneve, a fire continues at the site of the missile strike. People are being evacuated from residential areas. More than 400 rescue workers and police officers have been deployed to deal with the aftermath of the attack,” the Ukrainian president noted.
