The New Mazda MX-5 May Feature Sports Car-style Doors

This is the next generation of the legendary MX-5 Miata.

Mazda is developing a new sports car that could become the next generation of the legendary MX-5 Miata. The company’s patent documents have revealed an unusual body design featuring a front-mounted engine, rear-wheel drive, and upward-opening doors similar to those found on Lamborghini and McLaren models, according to Autoblog (translation by Charter97.org).

This layout was not created solely for a striking appearance. Mazda engineers are using the unusual door design to increase body rigidity and reduce the car’s weight.

The production version of the Iconic SP concept is considered the leading candidate to bring these ideas to life. It’s possible that it will become the next-generation MX-5 or a standalone sports model for the brand.

Mazda has previously stated that the new generation of the Miata will feature a gasoline-powered version, but is also exploring electrification options. Among the possible solutions is a hybrid system with a rotary engine, which the company has previously used in its projects.

At the same time, fans of the brand hope that Mazda will preserve the MX-5’s key features—a lightweight body, simple design, and driving pleasure. “The secret to the Miata’s success has always been not record-breaking power, but the driving experience,” experts note.

If the project comes to fruition, Mazda could demonstrate that a sports car with character can thrive even in the age of electrification.
