Former Russian Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov has died. His death was announced by the VTB United League, of which he was honorary president, according to Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty.

Sergei Ivanov was born on January 31, 1953, in Leningrad. He graduated from the translation department of the Faculty of Philology at Leningrad State University, then from the Higher Courses of the KGB of the USSR in Minsk. He worked for the KGB and, after the collapse of the USSR, continued his service in the Foreign Intelligence Service and the Federal Security Service. In the late 1990s, he held the positions of deputy director of the FSB and secretary of the Russian Security Council.

Ivanov served as Russia’s Minister of Defense from 2001 to 2007. He then served as First Deputy Prime Minister, and from 2011 to 2016, he headed the Presidential Administration of Russia. From 2016 to 2026, he served as the President’s Special Representative for Environmental Protection, Ecology, and Transportation.

In February 2026, Ivanov stepped down from this position. Presidential Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov stated at the time that the decision to resign was made at Ivanov’s own request.

The cause of death has not yet been disclosed.
