Ukraine Attacked Russia With A Record Number Of Drones

The Tula Region has become one of the main targets of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

The Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) carried out the largest nighttime attack on Russia since the start of the war. According to data from the Russian Ministry of Defense, on the night of June 26, Russian air defense systems “intercepted and destroyed” 660 Ukrainian drones over 12 regions and the annexed Crimea. Prior to this, the largest attack in terms of the number of drones involved took place on the night of May 17—at that time, the Russian military reported shooting down 556 drones. This record was nearly matched on the night of June 18—the military reported 555 drones destroyed. Also on June 18, the Ukrainian Armed Forces launched a record number of drones at Russia in a single day—992.

Last night one of the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ main targets was the Tula Region, over which, according to Governor Dmitry Milyaev, 157 drones were shot down. The regional governor reported damage to an industrial facility in Novomoskovsk and a private home in the Shchekinsky District. One woman was injured. As Astra has established, the drones struck the Azot plant, which is the largest domestic producer of ammonia and nitrogen fertilizers and, according to Reuters, supplied raw materials for explosives. Also in Novomoskovsk, a thermal power plant caught fire; it provides heat and hot water to 60% of the city’s residential sector, which has a population of over 115,000 people.

Another target of the Ukrainian attack was Moscow. According to the mayor of the Russian capital Sergei Sobyanin, at least 47 drones were shot down overnight as they approached the city. Sobyanin did not provide any further details, adding only that emergency services are working at the crash sites. There is no information on casualties. Against this backdrop, restrictions on incoming and outgoing flights were imposed at Moscow’s Domodedovo, Vnukovo, and Sheremetyevo airports.

Ukraine is attacking Russian territory with an increasing number of drones, which is overloading air defense systems, The Wall Street Journal noted. According to the publication’s calculations, in May the Russian Ministry of Defense reported intercepting 8,849 drones, compared to 3,676 in January and 2,504 in May of last year. As a result, the success rate of strikes is increasing. According to Jane’s, a defense intelligence firm, approximately 35% of Ukraine’s confirmed successful strikes against Russian rear areas this year occurred in June.

The day before, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that he had approved a “40-day influence operation” against Russia for the Security Service of Ukraine “with the aim of bringing the war to an end.” He did not specify what this entailed. However, prior to this, Zelenskyy discussed a “plan for long-range sanctions, medium-range sanctions,” and the work of the “Alpha” Special Operations Center on the front lines.
