Using missiles or drones.
Two countries on NATO’s eastern flank have reported signs that Russia is preparing possible provocations against the Baltic states or Poland, which may be intended to test the Alliance’s unity. This is reported by The Guardian reports, citing Western sources.
According to these sources, this does not involve a full-scale attack, but rather limited actions as part of a hybrid war.
“We see signs that Russia is preparing military provocations against the Baltic states or Poland,” Latvian intelligence officials noted.
The agency speculates that such actions could include the use of missiles, drones, or other means to pressure the West with the aim of weakening support for Ukraine.
It is also noted that the Kremlin may attempt to influence NATO’s political decisions through demonstrative but limited actions.
Western analysts believe that Russia does not yet have the resources to open a new front against NATO, but it may resort to cyberattacks, sabotage, drone incidents, and attacks on critical infrastructure.
Experts also note that such actions have already been recorded in previous years in European countries.
The Guardian also quotes a high-ranking political source from another NATO member country:
“We are receiving intelligence indicating that Vladimir Putin is planning certain actions against the Baltic states.”
The article notes that the Kremlin may take such a step due to the increasingly difficult situation in the war against Ukraine. Ukrainian long-range strikes on Russian territory, mounting economic pressure, and a lack of strategic successes on the front lines are pushing Moscow to seek other ways to pressure the West. One such scenario could be a staged provocation against NATO’s eastern flank, designed primarily to achieve a political effect rather than to trigger large-scale military operations.
