Inga Ruginene will be replaced by the mayor of Jonava.
The leader of the Lithuanian Social Democrats Mindaugas Sinkevičius intends to head the country's government once negotiations on forming a new ruling coalition are concluded. This was reported by LRT.
According to the publication, Sinkevičius has already informed his closest associates of his decision. If appointed, he will have to step down as mayor of Jonava and move with his family to Vilnius.
The politician is expected to officially announce his readiness to take the post of prime minister at the next meeting of the Social Democratic Party council. According to sources, his candidacy enjoys broad support within the party.
The current head of government, Inga Ruginiene, according to the portal, would like to return to the post of Minister of Social Protection and Labor. A few weeks ago, Sinkevičius promised to support her future career plans. Currently, the ministry is headed by Social Democrat Jurate Zailskene.
In early June, the Social Democrats decided to remove the far-right party “Dawn of the Nemunas” from the ruling coalition and form a new majority together with the “For Lithuania” Democratic Union.
On Friday, it was reported that members of the revamped coalition had finalized the coalition agreement. The document still needs to be formally approved by the leaders of the political parties.
Disagreements within the ruling coalition had been mounting for several months. As early as January, Ingė Ruginienė had to assure the public that the coalition would continue its work until its members decided otherwise.
