The pontiff made the statement on World Press Freedom Day.
Pope Leo XIV on World Press Freedom Day condemned violations of free speech and honored journalists. This was reported by Reuters.
"Today we celebrate World Press Freedom Day ... unfortunately this right is often violated, sometimes in flagrant ways, sometimes in more hidden forms," he said in a homily after the weekly Sunday prayer.
The pope urged the faithful to remember journalists and reporters who did not survive working in hotspots.
In past speeches, the head of the Catholic Church has called journalism a pillar of society and democracy, and information a public good that must be protected and guarded against manipulation.
