Because of the stalemate in peace talks with Russia.
US President Donald Trump's special envoys - Steve Whitkoff and Jared Kushner - have abandoned a trip to Kiev that was planned for April, the Kyiv Independent reported, citing informed sources. The main reason, according to the newspaper's interlocutors, is the lack of progress in peace talks between Russia and Ukraine: the American side sees no point in the visit, which can only emphasize the stalemate rather than move the dialogue forward.
"The Russians insist that they want all of Donbass. Our position is: let's find a decent solution. Therefore, it is still unclear why Trump's special envoys should travel here to hear the same thing again," the Ukrainian official explained on condition of anonymity.
Another reason for canceling the trip was the US war with Iran, because of which Whitkoff and Kushner were completely absorbed in the Middle East settlement. In addition, according to the newspaper's interlocutors, it is "difficult" for Whitkoff to travel by train, and there is now no possibility to fly to Kiev by plane.
Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky has previously publicly expressed disappointment that Trump's representatives have repeatedly been to Moscow, but have never come to Kiev. This time, according to the original plan, Whitkoff and Kushner were supposed to first meet with Zelensky and then travel to the Russian capital for talks with Vladimir Putin, the Kyiv Independent wrote.
An unnamed US official, for his part, told the publication that the visit was still under discussion but had not yet been "confirmed." At the same time, communication between Kiev and Washington has not been interrupted and officials continue to coordinate through other channels, the Ukrainian source added. He also pointed out that Kiev was looking for "new formats" for interaction with the USA.
