Latvian Prime Minister Resigns

Latvian Prime Minister Resigns

Along with her went the entire government.

Prime Minister Evika Silinja has resigned, and the entire Latvian government has resigned along with her.

This was announced in a special news release by Edmunds Jurevics - a member of the New Unity party and head of its faction in the Latvian Saeima, LSM reports.

Even on Wednesday evening, Interior Minister Rihards Kozlovskis said that Silinja had no intention of leaving office.

But in the morning, the leader of the Progressive parliamentary faction Andris Šuvajevs said that in the event of a vote of no confidence, the government could lose parliamentary support the very same day.

The opposition hoped to achieve the prime minister's resignation in an unconventional way. According to Seimas regulations, a motion of no confidence is usually considered no sooner than five days after a draft decision is submitted. However, the MPs intended to use one of the earlier proposals on Silin, left over from the unfinished session on May 7, which would allow the issue to be put to a vote immediately.

In the morning, at the prime minister's request, the session was adjourned for an hour until 10:00. After it ended, the parliament speaker did not explain the reasons for the pause, and the prime minister was expected to address lawmakers.

Till then, however, Silinya did not appear in the session hall. Instead, she held a press conference in the Cabinet building, where she officially announced her resignation.
