Ukraine Has Hit One Of Russia's Largest Explosives Factories

A column of smoke rose above the business.

On the night of April 30, Ukrainian drones attacked Dzerzhinsk in the Nizhny Novgorod Region, locals told Shot. According to them, there were about 10 explosions in different parts of the city. Explosions were also heard in the southern and central part of Kstovo, which is near Nizhny Novgorod. Officially, the region's authorities did not comment on the information about the raid. The target of the drones in Dzerzhinsk was the Ya. M. Sverdlov Plant, it follows from an analysis of video and photos of eyewitnesses conducted by Astra. After the impact, a column of smoke rose above the enterprise.

The Sverdlov plant in Dzerzhinsk is one of the largest producers of explosives in Russia with more than 100 years of history. It is part of the country's military-industrial complex and is of strategic importance. The plant is on Kiev's sanctions list "for supporting actions that undermine or threaten the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine." The enterprise also fell under the sanctions of the US, EU, UK, Japan and Switzerland. Earlier Ukrainian drones have already attacked the plant. Thus, as a result of a strike in October 2024, one of its workshops was damaged.

According to the Russian Defense Ministry's summary, over the past night, the on-duty air defense means (air defense) "intercepted and destroyed" 189 Ukrainian drones over Russian regions. In particular, the drones were spotted over the Astrakhan, Belgorod, Bryansk, Volgograd, Voronezh, Kursk, Lipetsk, Nizhny Novgorod, Rostov, Ryazan, Samara, Saratov, Tula and Ulyanovsk regions.

Before that, the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) concentrated strikes on Russian chemical plants that may supply raw materials for weapons production. On April 6, the Minudobrenia plant in the town of Rossoshi, Voronezh Region, was attacked, and on April 4, two chemical plants in Togliatti, Samara Region, were attacked: "Tolyattikauchuk" and "KuibyshevAzot".

On March 27, drones struck Apatit JSC, which is part of the Cherepovets chemical cluster of the PhosAgro group. On February 25, the Dorogobuzh plant in the Smolensk region was attacked. Seven people were killed. On February 17, drones struck the Metafrax Chemicals plant in the Perm region. On February 7, the largest chemical plant in the Tver Region, the Redkinskiy pilot plant, was hit.
