The administration noted Trump's "fearless" behavior during the incident.
White House press secretary White House spokeswoman Caroline Leavitt said the target of the shooting was US President Donald Trump and officials from his administration.
She wrote this on social media X.
Acting US Attorney General Todd Blanch had previously suggested that Trump was the shooter's target.
"What should have been a fun evening at a dinner where President Trump told jokes and celebrated free speech was disrupted by a depraved madman who tried to kill the president and as many Trump administration officials as possible," she said.
Levitt also said Trump "was fearless."
It was reported that on the evening of April 25 in Washington, D.C., during the White House Correspondents' Dinner at the hotel where U.S. President Donald Trump was staying with First Lady Melania Trump, shots rang out; they were evacuated immediately.
Law enforcement officials said the attacker turned out to be 31-year-old teacher Cole Thomas Allen of Torrance, California. He has been taken into custody. The attacker's motives are unknown.
