The attack was preceded by an order from Netanyahu.
The Israel Defense Forces struck military infrastructure of the Lebanese Hezbollah group in southern Lebanon. As reported by the IDF Spokesperson's Office, the struck facilities were used by Hezbollah to prepare attacks against Israeli soldiers and the State of Israel. "The Israel Defense Forces will continue to firmly counter threats against Israeli civilians and soldiers," the agency said in a statement.
The attack was preceded by an order from Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, who instructed the IDF to launch a "powerful strike" against Hezbollah facilities on April 25. Netanyahu's office specified that the decision was made after the group violated the ceasefire.
A day earlier, on April 24, US President Donald Trump said that the ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon would be extended for three weeks following "very good" talks between the two countries' ambassadors in Washington. He added that there was a "great chance" for peace, but that both sides "need to think about Hezbollah," which is not subordinate to the Lebanese government. Trump warned that the group would disrupt the truce and Israel would "have to defend itself."
The very next day, Hezbollah called the US-brokered ceasefire "meaningless." Lebanese authorities, for their part, reported two deaths in the Israeli strike, as well as Hezbollah shooting down an Israeli drone.
The sides had previously agreed to a ten-day cease-fire that began April 17. "Hezbollah indicated at the time that its actions "will depend on developments." The US State Department stressed that the ceasefire could be extended if the talks are successful and if the Lebanese authorities prove capable of controlling the situation on their territory by taking real steps to prevent Hezbollah and other paramilitary groups from attacking Israel.
Israel launched a "limited ground operation" against Hezbollah in mid-March amid a war with Iran, in which the US is also involved. When Washington and Tehran began a truce dialog, the Iranian side demanded an end to fighting on Lebanese territory. After that, Trump asked Netanyahu to reduce the number of strikes on Lebanon, and on April 9, the Israeli prime minister ordered to start talks with Lebanese authorities on disarming Hezbollah and normalizing relations.
