US President Donald Trump has revealed details of the attack during the White House Correspondents' Dinner. An armed man rushed the checkpoint - he was neutralized by Secret Service agents.

How it happened

Trump said the room was secure. An armed man with several weapons rushed the checkpoint from about 45 meters away - well away from the hall itself.

Secret Service agents disarmed the attacker. One of the guards suffered a gunshot wound at close range, but his body armor protected him - the officer is doing well.

Trump posted a close-up photo of the attacker, as well as surveillance video from the scene.

Trump called the incident "very unexpected" and admitted he wanted to stay at the event - he said he "fought as hard as he could" but protocol mandated that he leave the building.

The president also revealed that he was preparing a speech, which he himself characterized as "the most inappropriate speech ever given" - and promised to deliver it next time.

When asked by a reporter why this sort of thing happens to him again and again, Trump replied:

"I've studied the history of assassination attempts - they always follow the most powerful people, like Abraham Lincoln. Those who do nothing are not followed. We've done a lot," he said.

The attacker has been apprehended. According to Trump, investigators have already gone to his apartment - he allegedly lives in California.
