The container ship could have been hijacked by the IRGC.
A Greek vessel was attacked near the Strait of Hormuz. This was stated to CNN by Greek Foreign Minister Georgios Gerapetritis.
"I can confirm that a Greek cargo ship was attacked, but I cannot confirm that it was hijacked by the Iranians," he said.
He said the Greek-owned vessel was flying the flag of Liberia. "We have sent out a general warning to all Greek-owned vessels urging them to exercise the utmost caution, restraint and avoid crossing the strait," he said.
Reuters reported today, April 22, that Iran had seized two container ships that were trying to leave the Persian Gulf. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps claimed the seizure of the Panama-flagged MSC Francesca and the Liberian-flagged Epaminondas.
KSIR accused the vessels of attempting to pass through the Strait of Hormuz without permission by disabling navigation systems.
Reuters wrote that the container ship Epaminondas reported an attack on the vessel about 27.7 kilometers off Oman. The UK Maritime Trade Operations Office (UKMTO) reported that an IRGC gunboat fired on the vessel.
"The captain of the container ship reported that an Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps gunboat approached the vessel without making contact via VHF radio channel, then opened fire. As a result of the shelling, the bridge was seriously damaged," the report said.
Greek operator Technomar Shipping Inc. declined to comment. According to the Greek Coast Guard, the crew of the Epaminondas consists of 21 people, including Ukrainians and Filipinos. The Coast Guard could not confirm the fact of the seizure of the vessel. According to MarineTraffic, the container ship with this name was flying the flag of Liberia and is now off the coast of Iran.
