A Belarusian Woman Was Fired After 30 Years Of Impeccable Service

One small detail helped her earn about 8,000 rubles.

A woman from Grodno had worked at the same company for nearly 30 years, but her employer decided not to renew her contract. The very next day after her dismissal, her position was removed from the staffing roster. The woman turned to the labor union and ultimately received about 8,000 rubles in compensation, as reported by the Grodno Regional Trade Union Association.

Oksana Belova (name and surname changed) had worked at the company for about 30 years. During that time, she had no disciplinary violations. Moreover, she was repeatedly honored at the district and regional levels and was awarded the badge “For Personal Contribution to the Development of the Industry.”

She had no intention of changing jobs, so the news that her contract would not be renewed came as a surprise to her. Believing her dismissal to be unlawful, she turned to the union for help.

As explained by Olga Yurashevich , a labor inspector with the Grodno Regional Organization of the Belarusian Trade Union of Forestry and Natural Resource Workers, a diligent employee can expect to have her contract renewed in accordance with Article 261-3 of the Labor Code. In her opinion, the woman had every reason to expect her employment to continue.

To investigate the situation, the lawyer visited the company. There, an important detail came to light: the very next day after the woman’s dismissal, her position was removed from the staffing table. In other words, this may not have been simply a matter of non-renewal of the contract, but rather a staff reduction. In the event of such a termination, the employee is entitled to severance pay in the amount of at least three average monthly salaries.

The employer attributed its decision to economic reasons. However, according to Olga Yurashevich, this does not exempt the employer from the payments required by law. In addition to severance pay, the woman was entitled to compensation for the period of forced absence from work, since the union deemed the dismissal unlawful.

The case did not go to court. The employer agreed to settle the dispute and paid the woman approximately 8,000 rubles.
