WSJ: Musk Personally Ordered Restrictions On Starlink Services For Ukraine

Zelenskyy's public statements led to an unofficial investigation within the White House.

Billionaire Elon Musk personally ordered to slow down the deployment of the military version of Starlink, on which Ukraine relies. This decision “caused panic in Kyiv and confusion within the Trump administration.”

This was reported by The Wall Street Journal.

According to two sources, last week Musk limited the connection speed of Ukrainian equipment to the satellite network, which rendered some offensive drones and interceptor drones virtually useless.

Shortly after news of the Starlink slowdown broke, Musk and Trump discussed the decision in a phone call. One of the sources claims that the two had discussed the issue even before the decision to slow down the service was made.

Public statements by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, specifically his statements that Ukrainians could die if service was not restored—led to widespread confusion about who had ordered the slowdown, as well as to an unofficial investigation within the White House.

Sources say that during the scandal, SpaceX representatives contacted their colleagues at the White House. They sought a unified understanding and a subsequent statement, which the company and the Trump administration “coordinated even before Musk’s directive.”

Musk himself wrote on social media a few hours after the news of the slowdown broke, stating that any restrictions are determined by the U.S. military. Meanwhile, Trump told reporters that he did not know who was to blame for the Starlink meeting but would like to find out.

Some U.S. officials claim that Musk acted unilaterally and that Trump did not issue any orders regarding Ukraine

However, a source familiar with the situation says that Musk spoke with several high-ranking administration officials, including Trump, before imposing the new speed limit. Ukrainian sources reported that this allowed Russian missiles to bypass Ukraine’s air defense systems.
