Zelenskyy's idea resonated with Republicans.
Yesterday I wrote about about an initiative by prominent Republican, Chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee Roger Wicker, who appealed to Donald Trump with a proposal to adopt the following course of action:
1. Ukraine ceases strikes on Russian oil infrastructure.
2. The U.S. assists the Ukrainian Armed Forces in targeting the facilities from which Russia launches missiles at Ukrainian civilian targets.
According to Wicker, this plan would help lower fuel prices—since strikes on oil refineries would cease—while ensuring that Ukraine is not left defenseless against Russian attacks.
Today, another Republican—Senator Kramer—spoke out in support of this initiative. In an interview with CBS, he said that he had personally discussed this idea with Zelenskyy, who responded with great enthusiasm.
The latter point is significant in terms of how the Ukrainian president is portrayed in the American media. Trump is trying to portray him as some kind of villain who would do anything—even bomb yet another oil refinery—just to drive up oil prices. Senators, however, are now effectively refuting this view.
According to their logic, Zelenskyy is by no means eager to bomb oil refineries specifically. He is more than willing to replace strikes on the oil industry with strikes on Russian missile launchers. In light of this, Trump’s position—should he refuse to accept this plan—will appear, to put it mildly, strange in the eyes of his fellow citizens. It’s one thing to understand why he’s defending Putin’s oil refineries, but to defend Russian missile launchers… Launchers that the Kremlin uses every day to kill civilians and children…
Kramer also spoke out against Trump’s refusal to impose anti-Russian sanctions: “By capitulating to an aggressor, you’ll only succeed in making its appetite grow.” The senator emphasized that he fully shares the criticism of his Republican colleagues who have spoken out against easing sanctions. And here it is particularly important that Kramer is considered an expert in the field of energy and has long been known as one of Trump’s allies regarding his energy policy.
In addition, Kramer supported the call for an investigation into the reasons behind the operational restrictions on Starshield, which the Ukrainians had complained about. I would like to remind you that yesterday, former federal prosecutor Andrew McCarthy wrote about the need for such an investigation in the conservative American publication National Review.
As we can see, the number of opponents to the U.S. president’s current course regarding the Russian-Ukrainian conflict is gradually growing.
