US President Joe Biden announced the massive package.

The United States of America has introduced a large-scale package of sanctions against Russia for the war in Ukraine and the death of Russian opposition leader Aleksey Navalny.

US President Joe Biden stated this, the White House press service reports.

“Today, I am announcing more than 500 new sanctions against Russia for its ongoing war of conquest on Ukraine and for the death of Aleksey Navalny,” he stated.

According to Biden, these sanctions will target individuals connected to Navalny’s imprisonment as well as Russia’s financial sector, defense industrial base, procurement networks and sanctions evaders across multiple continents.

“They will ensure [the Russian dictator Vladimir] Putin pays an even steeper price for his aggression abroad and repression at home,” Biden underlined.

Also, the United States is imposing new export restrictions on nearly 100 entities for “providing backdoor support for Russia’s war machine”.

“We are taking action to further reduce Russia’s energy revenues. And I’ve directed my team to strengthen support for civil society, independent media, and those who fight for democracy around the world,” the US President stressed.

Navalny's death and new sanctions against the Russian Federation

On February 16, 47-year-old Russian opposition leader Aleksey Navalny lost consciousness and subsequently died in the Arctic penal colony Polar Wolf, where he was serving a three-year prison sentence.

The politician's wife, Yulia Navalnaya, accused the head of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Putin, of the death of her husband.

The United States confirmed that Navalny did not die naturally, and announced a new package of sanctions against Russia. The new restrictions will affect its defense industry, and are designed to reduce export potential.

The US State Department said that the sanctions would be “crushing.”
