It's important to allow yourself to experience not only joy, but other emotions as well.

The birth of grandchildren is generally considered one of the happiest stages of life. But along with the joy, grandparents may experience fatigue, irritation, disappointment, and even old family conflicts. Psychologists consider these feelings normal, writes Psychology Today.

Future grandparents are often expected to react with nothing but enthusiasm. Questions like “Isn’t this wonderful?” leave virtually no room for other emotions.

“The joy is real. But so are the challenges,” psychologists remind us.

The arrival of grandchildren can reignite issues in relationships with adult children. Some grandparents help a lot with the children and quickly become exhausted, while others provide financial support or balance caring for their grandchildren with their own responsibilities and helping their elderly parents.

At the same time, some are afraid to speak openly about their feelings. They worry that conflicts with their adult children might cause them to lose the opportunity to see their grandchildren often.

A psychologist advises against trying to choose between “I adore my grandchildren” and “it’s sometimes hard for me.” These feelings can certainly coexist.

“I love spending time with my grandchildren and I miss my independence. I’m grateful for the opportunity to help, but at the same time, I’m exhausted,” the author cites as an example.

The main challenge for grandparents isn’t just learning to love the new generation. It’s much harder to accept that it’s now their adult children who are making the key decisions about child-rearing.

The expert calls this “two truths at once.” Joy and exhaustion, pride and disappointment, closeness and the desire to maintain personal space can all coexist.

Healthy relationships with grandchildren are built not on suppressing unpleasant emotions, but on the ability to acknowledge them. All of these feelings are part of the normal human experience.
