A Tribunal In The Hague Has Sentenced The Former President Of Kosovo To 25 Years In Prison

The Hague War Crimes Tribunal found former Kosovo President Hashim Thaçi guilty of war crimes, including murder, torture, and unlawful detention. This was reported by Reuters.
Tachi, 58, was sentenced to 25 years in prison for crimes he committed while serving as commander of the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) in the 1990s.
The tribunal found him guilty of killing 96 political opponents in 1998–1999 during the armed conflict in the former Yugoslavia. He was also convicted of the arbitrary and unlawful detention of 385 people, the torture of 303 people, and the cruel treatment of 49 people. None of the victims were actively participating in hostilities at the time the crimes were committed, the court added.
The tribunal stated that Thaçi himself actively participated in and encouraged the commission of the crimes. For example, in areas controlled by the Kosovo Liberation Army, detention centers were established for individuals considered opponents of the KLA, said Presiding Judge Charles Smith. According to him, people there were held in inhumane conditions, beaten, confined to tiny cells, denied adequate food and medical care, and killed.
Tachi himself denied all these charges.
The Special Tribunal for Kosovo was established in August 2015, separate from the UN International Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia. It was relocated to The Hague to avoid pressure on witnesses and ensure the independence of the proceedings. According to the judges, the trial took place amid severe intimidation of witnesses.
Thaci was arrested in November 2020.
