Trump May Impose A 100% Tariff On India For Russian Oil

Lindsey Graham's bill on "hellish" sanctions grants such authority.

India may face U.S. tariffs of up to 100% due to its purchases of Russian oil. A bill proposing new sanctions against Russia has cleared a major procedural hurdle in the U.S. House of Representatives, according to DW (translation — Charter97.org website).

The document, known as Lindsey Graham’s bill on “hellish” sanctions against Russia and Iran, provides for sanctions against the Russian leadership, the energy and defense sectors, as well as the “shadow fleet” that helps Moscow circumvent oil restrictions.

The bill has already been approved by the Senate. If the House of Representatives passes it, the bill will go to U.S. President Donald Trump for his signature.

“The proposed tariffs are intended to increase economic pressure on Moscow by targeting countries that continue to purchase Russian energy resources,” writes DW.

The bill poses the greatest risk to India. Since the start of the war in Ukraine, New Delhi has sharply increased its purchases of Russian oil. At the same time, relations between India and the U.S. have become noticeably strained.

Last August, Trump imposed an additional 25 percent tariff on Indian imports specifically because of purchases of Russian oil. The base reciprocal tariff was another 25%. In February 2026, the additional tariff on Russian oil was lifted, and the base rate was reduced to 18%.

Now Washington can once again use trade restrictions to force New Delhi to scale back its energy cooperation with Moscow.

“India and Russia have strengthened their energy ties since the start of the war in Ukraine, mainly thanks to Russian oil supplies,” notes DW.

At the same time, a trade agreement between India and the U.S. has yet to be concluded, which is creating additional tension in relations between the two countries.
