They are linked to children's success in school, social interactions, and health.
Certain personality traits of parents may be linked to how well their children perform in school, in social situations, in terms of health, and in other areas of life.
The model of the five major personality traits has existed since at least 1929, although its specific provisions have changed over time. Today, personality researchers who use this model believe that the way each of us thinks, behaves, and experiences our emotions falls somewhere on a spectrum of openness to new experiences, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism.
As Your Tango, these traits influence how we behave in all areas of life. Researchers recently found that if parents possess four specific traits, their children tend to achieve better outcomes in life compared to children of parents who do not possess these qualities. Some of these traits are fairly stable, but much can be changed if you’re willing to make an effort for the sake of your children’s well-being.
Openness Without Neuroticism
Being open-minded means more than just accepting new perspectives or trying new things. It’s also linked to imagination and creativity. Parents who are open to new experiences but not prone to neuroticism help their children explore the world and discover what they truly enjoy.
Such parents help children find hobbies that interest them and stick with them. By encouraging their child to try new activities, parents help them discover and develop their passions.
When a person is truly passionate about something, they are usually willing to work harder because they are eager to see it through to the end. Such parents help children stay committed to their goals without forcing them to meet specific expectations.
Extraversion
Extraversion is characterized by a person deriving energy from interacting with others. Parents with this trait are able to talk to a variety of people, even if they haven’t met them before. By observing this behavior in their parents, children acquire important social skills and learn to build relationships with others.
Research has shown that extroverted parents may also face certain challenges, but this is still better than having parents with higher levels of neuroticism. Children raised by neurotic parents often struggle with schoolwork and participating in extracurricular activities. This negatively affects their overall health, which is not observed to the same extent in children of extroverted parents.
Extroverted parents do not always pay much attention to their children’s grades, but they usually encourage their sociability. This is just as important for forming meaningful relationships: through social interaction, children develop social skills and are less likely to become isolated.
Agreeableness
Being agreeable isn’t always easy, but it’s important. If a parent lacks this trait, they may find themselves in unnecessary conflicts more often or stubbornly stick to their position. Kind parents, on the other hand, are able to cooperate with those around them and find common ground with them.
Such parents teach children to resolve conflicts effectively. They do not let their children get caught up in gossip and do not encourage them to shirk responsibility. They teach them to be flexible and to respect other people’s opinions. This helps children build strong relationships with those around them.
It has also been shown that kind parents have a positive impact on their children’s health. Parents who scored higher on this measure were significantly more likely to have physically healthy children.
Conscientiousness
Conscientiousness means that a person carefully considers their actions. Such people approach interactions with others consciously and strive to make the most of their communication. They are mindful of others’ personal boundaries and take care to respect them.
Conscientious people understand that violating others’ boundaries can seriously affect another person’s mental well-being, and they strive to prevent this.
Such parents also help maintain their children’s physical health. The study’s authors note: “Children are more likely to be healthier if their parents are conscientious.”
These parents understand the importance of physical health because they themselves are accustomed to carefully considering such issues. They encourage their children to play sports and eat a balanced diet. If a child doesn’t do this, they step in to ensure the child’s health.
They understand how important this is and are able to find new ways to keep their child happy and healthy.
