The U.S. House Of Representatives Has Lifted The Hold On A Bill Imposing Sanctions Against Russia

Lindsey Graham was the one who proposed them.

The U.S. House of Representatives has cleared a key procedural hurdle and paved the way for further consideration of a bill imposing sanctions on Russia. The bill, in particular, provides for the possibility of imposing tariffs on countries that purchase Russian energy resources, according to The Hill.

The procedural decision was passed by a narrow margin—214 votes in favor and 211 against.

Two Democrats supported the bill’s advancement—Jared Golden and Marie Glusenkamp Perez. This marks the second time in the past two weeks that they have voted against their party’s position.

The bill can now proceed to debate and a final vote in the House of Representatives. Its primary sponsor was the late Republican Senator Lindsey Graham.

Republican Congressman Michael McCaul called the bill’s progress an important signal to Russia regarding U.S. support for Ukraine.

“Senator Lindsey Graham fully understood these global threats, and that is precisely why he worked on this bill for over a year,” McCaul said.

At the same time, representatives of the Democratic Party oppose the bill. In particular, they point out that the bill expands the president’s authority to impose tariffs.
