The U.S. Announced That It Has Deployed Weapons In Earth's Orbit

The Pentagon has begun to openly utilize offensive capabilities in space.

The U.S. Space Force has deployed in Earth orbit "weapons for space control." U.S. Air Force Secretary Troy Maink made this announcement at the Air, Space, and Cyber Warfare Conference, according to Air & Space Forces Magazine reports. This is the Pentagon’s most explicit acknowledgment to date that the U.S. is using offensive capabilities in space.

“Today, we continue to ensure our readiness to counter evolving threats, wherever they may exist,” Maink said. “That is why the Space Force now has space-based assets in orbit capable of protecting combined forces from hostile enemy actions.”

It is noted that this is the first time such a reference to space weapons in orbit has been made. During a question-and-answer session following his remarks, Meink said that this acknowledgment was intentional and that the wording was “very well thought out.”

“It is extremely important that we maintain our superiority not only in the air but also in space,” he said. “That is why we had to take steps so that, in the event of a threat, we could fight back.”

Maink declined to discuss the capabilities of space weapons in more detail during a briefing with reporters.

The official stated that the Space Force is currently working to deploy systems designed to track and destroy threats from space, and highlighted two key areas: the space interceptor program and a system for detecting moving airborne targets in space. Both are part of the Pentagon’s enhanced “Golden Dome” missile defense system.
