U.S. Senator Tom Tillis: Putin Wants To Starve Africa

The dictator of the Russian Federation is deliberately destroying Ukraine's food industry.

Russian dictator Vladimir Putin does not yet want to slow the pace of hostilities before winter and, most likely, intends to wait out this season to strengthen his position. This view was expressed by Senator Tom Tillis, co-chair of the Senate NATO Watch and a Republican from North Carolina, in comments to "Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty".

He noted that if the Russian president is “intellectually honest with himself,” he understands that he is at the limit of his capabilities.

His economy is suffering. He is about to run for re-election. He’ll have to consider compulsory conscription after paying thousands of dollars to encourage people to volunteer. He’s sending prisoners to the battlefield. To me, these are all signs of a desperate despot,” Tillis said.

The senator added that Putin wants to survive the winter and gain additional leverage afterward. He emphasized that the U.S. must continue to support Ukraine and not allow Russia to use this period as a tool for exerting pressure.

“We need to make sure that winter—the suffering he is already very clearly trying to inflict on Ukraine—will be a terrible winter for him. And the American people need to be informed about his terrorist tactics here. We’ve heard so many reports of behavior that is indicative of a terrorist. Therefore, given how they’re trying to terrorize the population, he sees this winter as an opportunity. And I view this winter as an opportunity—an opportunity to help him continue sliding down the slippery slope of failure,” the senator warned.

Tillis also commented on Russian attacks on facilities belonging to American companies in Ukraine. He believes they should be viewed not only as attacks on American businesses, but also as part of the Kremlin’s strategy to terrorize the country.

“As for the attacks on American companies, I think all of this needs to be made public; it needs to be reported. But I don’t think the U.S. views this simply as an attack. I hope we won’t view this merely as an attack on American industry or a corporation. We must view this as an attack on democracy and a sovereign state that has done nothing to deserve it,” he added.

Commenting on the facility belonging to the American company Cargill that was damaged as a result of Russian attacks, the senator called it yet another example of Putin’s actions aimed at terrorizing the population and directly affecting large numbers of people.

According to him, this is not just about a specific facility, but about the entire supply chain—from growing crops to exporting them and providing people with food.

“Putin is deliberately choosing not only to cause harm to people who are trying to grow corn and grain and export them, but also to directly affect access to food in the world’s most geographically challenging regions, particularly in Africa. This is part of his plan and strategy. Putin has, in essence, decided to destroy Ukraine’s food industry and starve people in Africa for the sake of his own selfish goals,” Tillis said.
