The U.S. Has Offered To Supply Nuclear Fuel To Iran

In exchange for Tehran's agreement to halt uranium enrichment.

The U.S. is prepared to supply Iran with nuclear fuel if the country shuts down its uranium enrichment program, said U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright. “We can supply [nuclear] fuel [to Iran] from abroad. They could rejoin the community of nations and bring peace and prosperity to their people,” Wright said in an interview Bloomberg. According to him, if Tehran rejects Washington’s proposal and continues its covert nuclear weapons program, it will face opposition from the U.S. military. At the same time, Wright emphasized that Washington would prefer negotiations on this issue.

The energy secretary also noted that the U.S. has nearly completed the development of its own uranium supply chain. Specifically, he said, the department is finalizing long-term agreements regarding uranium production and cooperation with partners. At the same time, the secretary noted that Washington is “concerned” about the absence of international inspectors in Iran who are supposed to verify the location of uranium stockpiles. Last week, IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi stated that activity had been detected at a nuclear facility located near Mount Kirk.

Earlier, sources at The New York Post reported that the U.S. military had prepared for “the most complex operation in military history” to seize enriched uranium at Iranian nuclear facilities. To this end, they said, “thousands of military personnel” could be deployed, who would have to clear landmines and deploy engineering units and large forces to block access to the nuclear facilities. At the same time, according to the plan, a small group of special forces would be tasked with the actual seizure of the uranium.

U.S. President Donald Trump has repeatedly stated that Iran must not acquire nuclear weapons. Washington has estimated that Tehran possesses approximately 440 kg of highly enriched uranium. For its part, Iran has categorically ruled out transferring it to the U.S., despite Washington’s offer to unfreeze $20 billion in Iranian assets in exchange.
