The Opposition Wins Sweden's Parliamentary Elections

By a margin of one seat.

In Sweden, results are being tallied from the general parliamentary elections held on September 13. With votes counted in 94.7% of the electoral districts, the center-left opposition parties, led by Social Democrat Magdalena Andersson, won 175 seats, while right-wing parties, led by incumbent Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, have won 174, according to The Guardian.

Commenting on the preliminary results, Prime Minister Kristersson stated that voters had made their voices heard, but that “the final result is not yet in.” He also added that it remains to be seen which government will lead Sweden, but promised to “do everything possible to ensure that this government is the best for our country.”

The Swedish Election Authority stated that the preliminary vote count would not be ready until September 17. Magdalena Andersson, speaking to her supporters, urged them to wait for the final election results. She clarified that the Social Democrats are “ready to take responsibility for the outcome” and form a new government.

The Guardian expects that coalition talks could take a long time once the votes are counted. The center-right bloc, consisting of the so-called “Tidö” parties, has been in power for four years. It includes the Moderates, the Christian Democrats, and the Liberals, as well as the SD, Sweden’s second-largest party. The opposition center-left bloc includes Sweden’s largest party—the Social Democrats—as well as the Center Party, the Green Party, and the Left Party.
