Journalists showed how ground robots are being prepared for combat in the Donbas.
Ukraine is rapidly increasing its use of ground-based drones on the front lines in an effort to compensate for a shortage of personnel and reduce casualties among its troops. Journalists from Reuters visited the workshops of the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ Third Army Corps, where “Hyenas” and other robotic platforms are being prepared for combat operations (translation by Charter97.org).
Ground drones are used for a wide variety of tasks. They transport ammunition and food, evacuate the wounded, fire machine guns, suppress enemy positions, and deliver explosives to key targets. According to the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense, these vehicles have completed more than 50,000 logistics and evacuation missions this year alone.
“One of the unit’s most in-demand robots has been the ‘NC13.’ It has already been used during assault operations and, in some cases, has forced Russian troops to surrender,” writes Reuters.
However, the technology is not yet capable of fully replacing humans. Robots have difficulty navigating rough terrain, and infantry must still be deployed to clear trenches.
The commander of the Third Army Corps Andriy Biletsky believes that the army is on the verge of a new technological revolution. By the end of the year, the proportion of infantry on the front lines could be reduced by about a third.
“The gradual replacement of humans with robots is a new revolution in military affairs,” Biletsky said.
Automation will allow soldiers to be withdrawn from the most dangerous tasks. Artificial intelligence should also help commanders make decisions faster and manage units more effectively.
“We must free people from routine and deadly work,” say Ukrainian military officials.
At the same time, the large-scale deployment of combat robots shows just how rapidly the nature of war is changing. Whereas tanks and infantry used to play the leading role on the battlefield, machines—which an operator can control from a safe distance—are now taking on an increasing number of tasks.
