Lukashenko Was Just Being Himself

Who is the real “scoundrel”?

During a regular meeting, Lukashenko demanded that officials “protect children from charlatans in the field of education.” Fair enough, since this has long been a pressing need. But there is one caveat, writes “Solidarnast” writes.

The issue isn’t that, in this case, the ruler has ordered a crackdown on private tutors. The real problem isn’t them at all, no matter how hard Lukashenko and the education minister he appointed try to discredit the institution of private tutoring. They called the wrong people “crooks.”

No one has caused as many problems for the Belarusian education system as Lukashenko himself has over more than three decades in power. Endless revisions of curricula and textbooks, ill-conceived reforms—this is by no means an exhaustive list.

The man who has brought back Soviet-era practices—reeking of mothballs—to schools—from collecting waste paper and scrap metal, to participating in the harvest instead of attending classes, to “voluntary-compulsory” membership in pseudo-patriotic organizations.

We need to protect our children not from private tutors, but from those who brainwash them with propaganda, who stage photo shoots with weapons for them, and who prepare them for the role of future cannon fodder.

Unfortunately, solving this problem depends directly on the departure from power of the chief “defender” of Belarusian children.
