August Breaks Records

A heat wave has hit Belarus.
The first two days of August brought Belarus a total of 13 new daily temperature records. The highest temperature was recorded on August 1 in Brest—where the air warmed up to +36.3 degrees, according to Belhydromet.
On the very first day of August, ten weather stations set new all-time highs. In Brest, the previous record from 1994 was surpassed by 1.3 degrees. In Pinsk, the temperature reached +35.6 degrees; in Polesskaya, +35.2; and in Ivatsevichi and Zhitkovichi, +35.1.
In Mozyr, the air warmed up to +35 degrees; in Lelchitsy and Oktyabr—to +34.9; in Gantsevichi—to +34.4; and in Slutsk—to +34.1 degrees.
The reading in Zhitkovichi was particularly noteworthy: a record that had stood since 1938 was broken there. The previous high for August 1 was +33.6 degrees.
In Bobruisk, the daily record set in 2014—+32.9 degrees—was tied on this day.
The heat continued on August 2. In Mozyr, the temperature reached +35.4 degrees, exceeding the previous high from 2014 by 1.1 degrees. New records were also set in Bragin, where the temperature rose to +34.9 degrees, and in Lelchitsy—to +33.3.
Most of the previous temperature records broken in early August had been set in 1994 and 2014.
As of August 4, red and orange weather hazard alerts have been issued in Belarus. Thunderstorms, heavy downpours in some areas, and wind gusts of up to 15–20 m/s are expected overnight and in the morning in the western part of the country. During the day, brief showers and thunderstorms are possible, mainly in the southwestern half of the country. Nighttime temperatures will range from +8 to +20 degrees, and daytime temperatures from +24 in the north to +36 in the south.
