The Investigative Committee of Belarus has concluded investigation into the criminal case of a man linked to a series of attacks on girls and women in the late 1990s. Investigators have established the circumstances surrounding nine murders and two attempted murders.
The crimes were committed between 1996 and 1999 in the Mogilev, Vitebsk, and Minsk regions. The case files were forwarded to the prosecutor for submission to the court.
According to the Investigative Committee, the accused would stalk teenage girls and young women near high-rise buildings. The attacks took place in elevators, on stairwell landings, and on rooftops.
Investigators classified the crimes as murders accompanied by rape, including those committed with particular cruelty.
Cases from the 1990s Were Re-examined
To solve the series of crimes, investigators and operatives re-examined the materials from criminal cases dating back to the late 1990s and early 2000s.
Experts compared crime scene investigation reports, forensic findings, and preserved physical evidence. Victims, relatives of the deceased, and witnesses were re-interviewed.
On-site verification of testimony was conducted with the defendant present. The data obtained was compared with the materials from the initial investigations and the conclusions of forensic experts.
Genome Reconstructed from Biological Traces
One of the key stages was the genetic analysis. The man was included among those from whom biological samples needed to be collected for comparison.
According to the Investigative Committee, using modern techniques, experts were able to reconstruct the complete genome of the suspected serial killer from fragments of biological evidence collected at the crime scenes.
Following a joint press conference by the Investigative Committee and the Ministry of Internal Affairs in October 2025, 16 more women came forward to law enforcement agencies. Their statements were reviewed, and the investigation classified certain incidents as hooliganism.
The defendant pleaded guilty
During questioning, the man pleaded guilty to all charges. According to him, he left his home with the premeditated intent to commit the crime.
He also told investigators that he had stopped the attacks out of fear of being exposed and arrested.
The court will make the final assessment of the evidence gathered.
The solving of crimes from past years became possible after a re-examination of criminal cases and the application of new methods of genetic analysis. The series of attacks has been unofficially dubbed the “elevator man” case, as some of the crimes took place in elevators and the entryways of apartment buildings.
