The President Of Lithuania Explained Why The CIA Director Traveled To Moscow

The visit to Moscow by CIA Director John Ratcliffe was likely part of an effort to ease geopolitical tensions amid the growing threat of Russian sabotage in Europe, said Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda. According to him, Lithuania expects to receive information from its partners about the content of the meetings “possibly next week.” However, he declined to discuss the specific goals of the talks. “I believe that this meeting was indeed aimed at reducing geopolitical tensions in our region. This is a positive development,” said Nausėda.

As reported by Bloomberg, the U.S. intelligence chief’s visit took place following warnings from intelligence officials that Russian intelligence and security agencies are considering the possibility of conducting operations as part of a hybrid war against the Baltic states and Poland. Possible scenarios include sabotage of infrastructure facilities and false-flag attacks. Europe has also recently faced a series of incidents, including incursions by armed drones, assassination attempts, and mysterious arson attacks. According to the agency’s assessment, these actions are likely intended to intimidate Kyiv’s main suppliers of weapons and financial aid.

Latvian President Edgars Rinkēvičs, as reported by The Moscow Times, in turn, declined to discuss the details of Ratcliffe’s plane being stopped in Riga but stated that American and Latvian intelligence services are working closely together. “We are preparing and constantly trying to understand the various potential threats we face. I have nothing alarming to report today, but the situation is very dynamic,” said Rinkēvičs.

U.S. President Donald Trump called Ratcliffe’s trip to Moscow “semi-routine.” He dismissed speculation that the visit was linked to Putin’s intention to “test NATO’s resolve,” sanctions against Iran, or a possible attack on the United Kingdom. “None of the above is the reason for the visit,” Trump emphasized.

At the same time, the U.S. president stated that Ratcliffe “wasn’t there without a reason” and that “something might come of” his trip. “We’re working very hard to end this war. And, to be honest, they both (Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Vladimir Putin. — TMT) want that,” Trump said.
