Why do Russian citizens have this reputation?
Threads user @pablofromrussland still doesn't understand why Belarusians and Ukrainians don't like his compatriots.
“I’m genuinely surprised by the comments,” he writes. “I lived in Russia for 20 years and never saw any Nazism in my own circles, but judging by the comments, I get the feeling that it’s the Russians themselves who’ve ruined their own reputation, or something. But, then again, a lot of people here pick on Russians, and in reality, I’ve never seen that either. In short, I’m curious where exactly and who exactly is acting with contempt.”
“I don’t understand why Ukrainians hate Russians so much? Essentially, thanks to this war, you’ve gotten the chance to live in Europe for free,” he shared his thoughts in yet another post.
Social media users explained to the author of the posts the reason behind this attitude toward Russians. The website Charter97.org cites some comments:
- Russians come to CIS countries and accuse the local population of Nazism if people speak to them in their native language instead of Russian. Is that normal? No! As for rubles, no comment at all. They come to Belarus and complain that stores don’t accept the Russian ruble. Yes, it’s just the way it is—different countries have different national currencies; after all, the Belarusian ruble isn’t accepted everywhere in your country either. At least here, you can exchange Russian rubles at currency exchange offices.
And comments like: “It’s so beautiful here—I thought it would be like it was in the ’90s.”
- It’s like dealing with a fool. A fool doesn’t know he’s a fool—only everyone around him realizes it. It’s the same with your Nazism; of course, you don’t notice it. But everyone around you suffers because of you.
- You’re in a bubble of people you’ve handpicked for yourselves after filtering them out. But out on the street, it’s a whole different story.
- You need a brain to understand anything—that’s not a risk for you, so don’t even bother.
- Simply because there’s nothing to love about you. There’s absolutely nothing left of a human being in you.
